September is the month of rice and paella. It’s time to harvest this grass, and September 20th marks International Paella Day, a date chosen in 2021 when UNESCO declared paella an Asset of Intangible Cultural Interest. These actions help keep the tradition alive and thus preserve it for future generations, both nationally and internationally.
The Tancat de l’Estell is a privileged enclave for an in-depth look at what has come to be known as Rice Culture, a chapter of agricultural and culinary traditions through which Arroz Tartana has been promoting its communication. There, surrounded by rice fields, are the original, centuries-old facilities: the old threshing floors and drying warehouses, the silos, and the mills used to transform the plant’s fruit into grains ready for sale.
The select group of chefs and restaurateurs participating in the 50 Top Paellas of Las Provincias publication attended the event eager to learn about rice cultivation and its varieties, as well as to enjoy paella at their tablecloths. Juan Valero, manager of Arroz Tartana, orchestrated the tour and guided the paella tasting.
