The European Union registers the new Protected Designation of Origin for olive oil from the Sierras Espadán and Calderona, made with the native mountain variety.
The European Union has officially recognized a new olive oil from the Valencian Community. The Official Journal of the European Union has published the regulation registering the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) “Aceite de las Sierras Espadán y Calderona” in the EU register of protected geographical indications, as confirmed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
Luis Velázquez, director of the Alto Palancia de Altura Olive Oil Cooperative, along with technician María Belenguer, have completed the specifications and single document, which has led to their obtaining the designation of origin. They consider this recognition a decisive step for the olive oil sector in the region, believing it represents European endorsement of the quality of the oil produced in the Espadán and Calderona mountain ranges and an opportunity to strengthen their market presence. “This has been a long process, taking us three years, in conjunction with the Regional Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Agriculture,” Velázquez stated.
